| Sample Visual Arts Projects
Working with professional artists, students who participate in a visual arts residency have the opportunity to create works of art that express their own unique perspectives. Residencies are available in various artistic mediums, which in the past have included fused, painted, and stained glass; haiku print bookmaking; and photojournalism. Click on the thumbnails below for some photo highlights of student visual art. To view more, go the student Project Gallery.
Under the guidance of glass artist Laura Strother, art students at Lamar Middle School and Bowie Middle School experimented with creating small stained-glass pieces, fusing glass in a kiln, and/or painting on glass. Students worked not only individually, but also in groups, which strengthened their cooperation skills.
Under the guidance of artist Jill Parr, art students at Travis Middle School worked to select personal themes including communication, motivation, determination, and love. Each student chose imagery as inspiration for his or her own haiku poem and experimented with printmaking, paper art, and bookmaking while completing the final work.
Under the guidance of photojournalist Dave Herman, News and Art and Humanities students at Austin Middle School created photo journals based on life skills such as communication, cooperation, self-confidence, creative thinking, and critical thinking.
